Automobile Design

  • How long can it take to design a car? What do they start off with?
  • They start off with the sketching phase and it takes three years.
  • Why is design called problem solving?
  • It is called problem solving because you do not have to design it yourself, you are given an industrial design degree
  • What is the feasibility stage? (What do they have to match up?)
  • It is where you take the sketches you really like that maintains the theme.
  • Do you think designing an automobile or other type of vehicle would interest you? Explain.
  • Yes, I do think this would interest me because I would love to learn what it is like and what it takes to design a car.

Automobile Body Styles and Design

Sports Car - Creates fun for the driver. Construction of sports cars often relies on lightweight components such as aluminum and very exotic carbon fiber to maximize engine power and improve handling.

Convertible-   A vehicle providing an open-air passenger cabin for traveling during good weather, convertibles provide the protection of a retractable roof when weather conditions turn unpleasant. The added weight and different aerodynamics caused by open top driving also results in slightly slower performance attributes for the convertible. In addition to convertibles that feature a retractable roof, some similar vehicles provide an open-air driving experience with a removable roof panel.

Wagon- The performance wagons demonstrate speed and handling almost identical to comparable sports sedans. There are some wagons on the market that exert a tougher character with the presence of an all-wheel drive system for buyers wanting some crossover vehicle-like capability.

Coupe- Considered sporty and personal, a coupe is a long-running body style in automobile circles. For buyers who want the sleek, sportiness of a coupe but want more than two doors, a styling evolution with some premium car manufacturers creating four-door coupes could be a consideration.

Luxury Car- A luxury car is considered the peak of driving comfort and aspires to provide the most rewarding sensation of motoring. Today's luxury cars generally offer more performance car-like ride qualities allowing them to be faster and more nimble.

Jobs in the Automotive Industry

The job I would like the most would be a classic car restorer because You get to spend your whole day with really nice  cars, making them look like brand new.

The job that I would like the least would be F1 Safety Car Driver because you never know when your wheels will explode and that would be too scary for me.

Certification in the Automotive Industry

NATEF- non-profit 501(c)(3)organization the mission of the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) is to improve the quality of automotive technician training programs nationwide at secondary and post-secondary, public and proprietary schools. there primary focus is to examine the structure, resources and quality of training programs and evaluates them against standards established by the industry.

SGS- focus on the design, construction and operation of motor vehicle inspection solutions all over the world. There primary focus is to provide unrivaled experience, supporting governments, manufacturers, traders, financial institutions and insurance companies across the world.

ASE- worked to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service by testing and certifying automotive professionals. There primary focus is to promote excellence in automotive repair and service.eee.
  • What are some aspects of being an automotive technician that you think you would enjoy? Explain.
  •  I think I would like to do the plumbing and electrical work because it deals with computers.
  • Discuss one or two things that you found interesting about the video.
  • I find it interesting how you need good communication skills and how they always seem to know how to fix the problem.
  • It is said that being an automotive technician requires life-long learning. Considering the aspects of mechanics, electronics and technology that the technician and student deal with in this video, discuss this notion of life-long learning and why it is important and necessary.
  • Life long learning is important and necessary because your dealing with cars and you must be able to know how to fix them correctly.
  • What do you think are some characteristics and skills someone should possess when considering a career as an automotive technician?
  • A skill they should think of is will I be good with cars or not? Is it something that I woulld want to do for the rest of my life?

Part Two of Two - Tech for the Sake of Tech

    • Many people surveyed about the technology in their cars were of younger generations. Did you find it surprising that younger people (ages 21-38) did not care about having smart phone connectivity options in their automobiles? Do you think your generation would feel the same about this option?find this option beneficial? Explain your reasoning.
    • I did find this surprising because so many people rely on cell phones and love technology. My generation I would feel would really love this option because everyone has a cell phone and uses it for everything.
    • The fact that many drivers are not using the connectivity options suggest that drivers are still using their smart phones while driving. Do you think the other technologies mentioned in the article (adaptive cruise control and blind spot warnings) helps address the dangers of distracted driving or only makes it easier for drivers to take more risks? Discuss your opinion.
    • Yes, I think it does help address the dangers of distracted driving but I do not think it will change much. People will still use their smartphones while driving.
    • Considering drivers you know (family and friends) and even your own preferences, how important are new technological features when considering the purchase of a new automobile?
    • For younger people they are very important but for elderly people they do not care so much.
    • What is one new technological feature that you would like to have, or would look for, when purchasing your own automobile? Why is it important to you?
    • A new feature I would look for would be being able to text on the screen in your car becaus eit would cause less accidents or risks of an accident.
    • Revisit the automobile timeline from the previous assignment. What is one new feature you think was introduced in older automobiles that drivers may have first thought was unnecessary and useless? Discuss.
    • The airbag because if they did not have it before and accidents still were not that bad they probably did not see how an airbag would help them

    Emerging Technologies and Automobiles

    • Out of the six emerging technologies discussed in the article you read, which one do you think is less likely to happen? Explain your reasoning.
    • I think that the Terrafugia TF-X is less likely to happen because it is a flying car.
    • Out of the six emerging technologies from the article, which one do you think will have the biggest impact on society? Discuss why.
    • I think the one that will have the biggest impact on society will be the Ford's Driver Workload Estimator Technology because it is helping the driver with their wellness while driving.
    • Out of the six emerging technologies, which one do you think is almost a reality or may already be part of newer automobiles in some shape or form? (In other words, out of the six of them, which is likely to be the first technology used in automobiles?)
    • I think the one that will be the first technology used in automobiles will be Ford's Driver Workload Estimator because it seems the most useful and realistic.
    • The first video you viewed discusses Ford's "Driver Workload Estimator" which is a biometric sensing system. How do you think this technology could help keep drivers and their passengers safer?
    • It could keep drivers and their passengers safe because when something is going wrong it is made aware and can help fix the problem.
    • The second video looks at a possible prototype of a flying automobile while the third video shows the actual trial run of a working model. What are your thoughts on this technology? What do you think are the benefits and the disadvantages of having an automobile that can travel by land and air?
    • The benefits would be that you can get places faster but people are not licensed to drive automobiles in the sky.
    • The idea of a self-driving automobile (or autonomous automobile) has been discussed and argued about for a number of years now. Some people think it is a great idea, and they argue it would result in less driver error and fewer accidents. Other people think it is robbing drivers of the "experience" of the open road and takes away the role of driving which many people enjoy. Where do you stand? Explain your position
    • I think that people should be able to drive because they are able to control the car themselve.

    Automobile Timeline

    • I think it is cool how Dodge invented an automobile made entirely of steel.
    • I think it is cool how Cadillac was the first American car maker to offer automatic stability control.
    • I think it is cool how in 1908 Henry Ford started making the Model T.
    • In 1939 the Nash Motor company invented the air conditioner.

    Part three of four

Henry Ford and the Model T

Explain how the assembly line changed from suggestions made to Henry Ford by three of his employees.
Instead of the workers moving, the line moved and the workers stayed in place.
Why did workers tend to stay longer and be more committed to Ford's company than other companies at that time?
He treated them fairly and gave them an affordable wage.
How much did the first Model T cost? For what class of people was it manufactured?
    It cost $800.
The Model T price dropped dramatically. To what price did it drop? Why do you think it dropped so much?
A little over $365. I think it dropped so much because
As the Model T became the main mode of transportation, what did this automobile offer people?
People could travel for pleasure and go wherever they want, whenever they want.

    Carl Benz

For how many years has the automobile been around?
120 years. What is a patent? The answer is not in the video, so search for an answer online.
The exclusive right granted by a government to an inventor to manufacture, use, or sell an invention for aa certain number of years.
When Carl Benz obtains a patent in January of 1886 for his invention, what title did he use to describe the automobile?
the birth certificate of the automobile.
Who in his family drives his invention in August of 1888? What is "born" from this drive?
His wife Berta. The first petral station.
What did the so called "axial pivot steering system" help solve?
Steering the front two wheels simultaneously.
What is the new name when the two automobile companies are merged.
Benz and co. and the Dimeler motor company.
What did Benz experience as a pioneer in technology that many pioneers never experience?
Lived to see his dream come true.
