Automobile Design

  • How long can it take to design a car? What do they start off with?
  • They start off with the sketching phase and it takes three years.
  • Why is design called problem solving?
  • It is called problem solving because you do not have to design it yourself, you are given an industrial design degree
  • What is the feasibility stage? (What do they have to match up?)
  • It is where you take the sketches you really like that maintains the theme.
  • Do you think designing an automobile or other type of vehicle would interest you? Explain.
  • Yes, I do think this would interest me because I would love to learn what it is like and what it takes to design a car.

Automobile Body Styles and Design

Sports Car - Creates fun for the driver. Construction of sports cars often relies on lightweight components such as aluminum and very exotic carbon fiber to maximize engine power and improve handling.

Convertible-   A vehicle providing an open-air passenger cabin for traveling during good weather, convertibles provide the protection of a retractable roof when weather conditions turn unpleasant. The added weight and different aerodynamics caused by open top driving also results in slightly slower performance attributes for the convertible. In addition to convertibles that feature a retractable roof, some similar vehicles provide an open-air driving experience with a removable roof panel.

Wagon- The performance wagons demonstrate speed and handling almost identical to comparable sports sedans. There are some wagons on the market that exert a tougher character with the presence of an all-wheel drive system for buyers wanting some crossover vehicle-like capability.

Coupe- Considered sporty and personal, a coupe is a long-running body style in automobile circles. For buyers who want the sleek, sportiness of a coupe but want more than two doors, a styling evolution with some premium car manufacturers creating four-door coupes could be a consideration.

Luxury Car- A luxury car is considered the peak of driving comfort and aspires to provide the most rewarding sensation of motoring. Today's luxury cars generally offer more performance car-like ride qualities allowing them to be faster and more nimble.

Jobs in the Automotive Industry

The job I would like the most would be a classic car restorer because You get to spend your whole day with really nice  cars, making them look like brand new.

The job that I would like the least would be F1 Safety Car Driver because you never know when your wheels will explode and that would be too scary for me.

Certification in the Automotive Industry

NATEF- non-profit 501(c)(3)organization the mission of the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) is to improve the quality of automotive technician training programs nationwide at secondary and post-secondary, public and proprietary schools. there primary focus is to examine the structure, resources and quality of training programs and evaluates them against standards established by the industry.

SGS- focus on the design, construction and operation of motor vehicle inspection solutions all over the world. There primary focus is to provide unrivaled experience, supporting governments, manufacturers, traders, financial institutions and insurance companies across the world.

ASE- worked to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service by testing and certifying automotive professionals. There primary focus is to promote excellence in automotive repair and service.eee.
  • What are some aspects of being an automotive technician that you think you would enjoy? Explain.
  •  I think I would like to do the plumbing and electrical work because it deals with computers.
  • Discuss one or two things that you found interesting about the video.
  • I find it interesting how you need good communication skills and how they always seem to know how to fix the problem.
  • It is said that being an automotive technician requires life-long learning. Considering the aspects of mechanics, electronics and technology that the technician and student deal with in this video, discuss this notion of life-long learning and why it is important and necessary.
  • Life long learning is important and necessary because your dealing with cars and you must be able to know how to fix them correctly.
  • What do you think are some characteristics and skills someone should possess when considering a career as an automotive technician?
  • A skill they should think of is will I be good with cars or not? Is it something that I woulld want to do for the rest of my life?

Careers in the Automotive Industry

  • What are some of the high-tech systems on automobiles today that were unheard of 30 years ago?
  • Stability and traction control systems, adaptive cruise control, and variable valve timing.
  • What areas should young people have skills in for a career as an automotive technician?
  • Math, science communicational and technical skills.
  • What are some advantages in obtaining an education as an automotive technicians versus other high-tech educational options?
  • You can get into the real world sooner with less debts.
  • How many new jobs and at what percentage of growth do they forecast will occur in the automotive technician field up to 2020?
  • 237 500 jobs and the percentage is 305 growth.
  • What is one thing that the automotive technician career is fairly "immune" to that has threatened other careers?
  • Customer call centre work.
  • Name at least four other positions that an automotive technician can do in the automotive industry.
  • Line technician, service consultant, service director, and store owner.
  • Why is the automotive technician role sometimes called "the portal career"?
  • Because so many people have started their careers in the automotive aftermarket as an auto technician.

Part Two of Two - Tech for the Sake of Tech

    • Many people surveyed about the technology in their cars were of younger generations. Did you find it surprising that younger people (ages 21-38) did not care about having smart phone connectivity options in their automobiles? Do you think your generation would feel the same about this option?find this option beneficial? Explain your reasoning.
    • I did find this surprising because so many people rely on cell phones and love technology. My generation I would feel would really love this option because everyone has a cell phone and uses it for everything.
    • The fact that many drivers are not using the connectivity options suggest that drivers are still using their smart phones while driving. Do you think the other technologies mentioned in the article (adaptive cruise control and blind spot warnings) helps address the dangers of distracted driving or only makes it easier for drivers to take more risks? Discuss your opinion.
    • Yes, I think it does help address the dangers of distracted driving but I do not think it will change much. People will still use their smartphones while driving.
    • Considering drivers you know (family and friends) and even your own preferences, how important are new technological features when considering the purchase of a new automobile?
    • For younger people they are very important but for elderly people they do not care so much.
    • What is one new technological feature that you would like to have, or would look for, when purchasing your own automobile? Why is it important to you?
    • A new feature I would look for would be being able to text on the screen in your car becaus eit would cause less accidents or risks of an accident.
    • Revisit the automobile timeline from the previous assignment. What is one new feature you think was introduced in older automobiles that drivers may have first thought was unnecessary and useless? Discuss.
    • The airbag because if they did not have it before and accidents still were not that bad they probably did not see how an airbag would help them

    Emerging Technologies and Automobiles

    • Out of the six emerging technologies discussed in the article you read, which one do you think is less likely to happen? Explain your reasoning.
    • I think that the Terrafugia TF-X is less likely to happen because it is a flying car.
    • Out of the six emerging technologies from the article, which one do you think will have the biggest impact on society? Discuss why.
    • I think the one that will have the biggest impact on society will be the Ford's Driver Workload Estimator Technology because it is helping the driver with their wellness while driving.
    • Out of the six emerging technologies, which one do you think is almost a reality or may already be part of newer automobiles in some shape or form? (In other words, out of the six of them, which is likely to be the first technology used in automobiles?)
    • I think the one that will be the first technology used in automobiles will be Ford's Driver Workload Estimator because it seems the most useful and realistic.
    • The first video you viewed discusses Ford's "Driver Workload Estimator" which is a biometric sensing system. How do you think this technology could help keep drivers and their passengers safer?
    • It could keep drivers and their passengers safe because when something is going wrong it is made aware and can help fix the problem.
    • The second video looks at a possible prototype of a flying automobile while the third video shows the actual trial run of a working model. What are your thoughts on this technology? What do you think are the benefits and the disadvantages of having an automobile that can travel by land and air?
    • The benefits would be that you can get places faster but people are not licensed to drive automobiles in the sky.
    • The idea of a self-driving automobile (or autonomous automobile) has been discussed and argued about for a number of years now. Some people think it is a great idea, and they argue it would result in less driver error and fewer accidents. Other people think it is robbing drivers of the "experience" of the open road and takes away the role of driving which many people enjoy. Where do you stand? Explain your position
    • I think that people should be able to drive because they are able to control the car themselve.

    Automobile Timeline

    • I think it is cool how Dodge invented an automobile made entirely of steel.
    • I think it is cool how Cadillac was the first American car maker to offer automatic stability control.
    • I think it is cool how in 1908 Henry Ford started making the Model T.
    • In 1939 the Nash Motor company invented the air conditioner.

    Part three of four

    Invention of the Automobile

    • Early automobiles used a steam engine.
    • The first automobile had three wheels.
    • During a demonstration the first automobile went out of control and crashed into a wall.

    The Ford Edsel

    • Named after Henry Ford's only son.

Henry Ford and the Model T

Explain how the assembly line changed from suggestions made to Henry Ford by three of his employees.
Instead of the workers moving, the line moved and the workers stayed in place.
Why did workers tend to stay longer and be more committed to Ford's company than other companies at that time?
He treated them fairly and gave them an affordable wage.
How much did the first Model T cost? For what class of people was it manufactured?
    It cost $800.
The Model T price dropped dramatically. To what price did it drop? Why do you think it dropped so much?
A little over $365. I think it dropped so much because
As the Model T became the main mode of transportation, what did this automobile offer people?
People could travel for pleasure and go wherever they want, whenever they want.

    Carl Benz

For how many years has the automobile been around?
120 years. What is a patent? The answer is not in the video, so search for an answer online.
The exclusive right granted by a government to an inventor to manufacture, use, or sell an invention for aa certain number of years.
When Carl Benz obtains a patent in January of 1886 for his invention, what title did he use to describe the automobile?
the birth certificate of the automobile.
Who in his family drives his invention in August of 1888? What is "born" from this drive?
His wife Berta. The first petral station.
What did the so called "axial pivot steering system" help solve?
Steering the front two wheels simultaneously.
What is the new name when the two automobile companies are merged.
Benz and co. and the Dimeler motor company.
What did Benz experience as a pioneer in technology that many pioneers never experience?
Lived to see his dream come true.

    Journal Entry #8: Digital Law

What I found most surprising about this unit was how careful you should be on the internet, always keep everything private.

The information that I found difficult to locate was two actions that can violate someones privacy.

It is a very good resource, it gives all the information that you need.

Same with this website. It is a very good resource, it gives all the information that you need.

They biggest issue is we rely on the internet too much and we tend to copy and paste other peoples information instead of our own.

The biggest issue for cyberbullying is that teens will do anything to bring someone down on the internet, and they do not know how to ignore it.

    Assignment #2: CyberBullying (and Privacy)

    1. Non-Consensual Distribution of an Intimate Image: if someone has a sexual/intimate picture/video of you that was created in private circumstances, and that person knowingly posts it online or shares it with someone else knowing that you would not consent to that (or being reckless about whether you would consent to it), the person could be charged.
Voyeurism: secretly observing or recording a person who reasonably believes his/her actions are private and:
    • who is in a place where the person might be expected to change or remove clothing (e.g. bedroom, bathroom, change room, cabin, tent);
    • who is all or partially naked or engaged in sexual activity at the time; or
    • where the recording is done for sexual reasons.

    2. Acts that  make others feel unsafe.
Harassment: doing or saying something that makes someone else scared for themselves or someone else (e.g. making threats, stalking, repeatedly texting/emailing, constantly following).

Acts that hurt the reputation of another person.
Impersonation: pretending or claiming to be someone else (living or dead) to benefit yourself or someone else, to hurt the person you are pretending to be or to hurt another person.

    3.
    1. Search online for the agency that is responsible for policing in your area.
    2. Phone the detachment, let them know your age and tell them what has happened.
    3. Go to www.cybertip.ca/report to tell us about your concern.

    4. You should always include your age. You should always also say if it is you in the picture or not. You should also let them know if you sent the picture or video to someone so it does not cause trouble. To deal with peers you should never message back to a mean message. You could also delete the bully from your social networks.

    5. What I found interesting about "Don't Let Others Write Your Story" is that everything they said was helpful, like sticking up for yourself.

    6. One way I could help promote the #changeyourstory is if they have a Facebook page I could share it.

    Assignment #1: Copyright and Copy-wrong

1.The Copyright Act provides that it is not an infringement of copyright to deal with a work for the purposes of research, private study, criticism, review, news reporting, education, satire, and parody, provided the dealing is “fair.”

    2.up to 10 per cent.

    3. Copying or communicating that exceeds the limits in these Fair Dealing Guidelines may be referred to a supervisor or other person designated by the educational institution for evaluation. An evaluation of whether the proposed copying or communication is permitted under fair dealing will be made based on all relevant circumstances.

4.Any fee charged by the educational institution for communicating or copying a short excerpt from a copyright protected work must be intended to cover only the costs of the institution, including overhead costs.

    5. A teacher can copy (or take any other necessary action) in order to display a work protected by copyright. This permits the use of whiteboards and similar tools, overhead projection using a device such as an LCD screen, overhead, opaque, or slide projector, provided the work is used for the purpose of education and training and is not already commercially available in a medium that is appropriate for this purpose.

    6. Educational institutions may not make a large-print book for a student with a perceptual disability without permission from the copyright owner.

    7. Yes, you can play sound recordings and turn on televisions and radios in the classroom, subject to all of the following conditions: • it must take place on the premises of an educational institution; • it must be for educational or training purposes; • it must not be for profit; • it must take place before an audience consisting primarily of students of the educational institution, persons acting under its authority, or any person who is directly responsible for setting a curriculum for the educational institution; and • it must not involve a “motive of gain.“

    8. No. Copying an entire musical score that is not in a copyrightprotected work containing other musical scores is not permitted. Permission must be obtained. Normally, the music publisher can provide permission. Sometimes the right to copy music is given when music is purchased. The music books or sheets will have a notice stating that copying is permitted. In this case, music can be copied without the copyright owner’s permission in accordance with the terms of the notice. Fair dealing permits limited educational dealings with musical scores. First, copying an entire single musical score from a copyrightprotected work containing other musical scores is permitted. Second, up to 10 per cent of a musical work can be copied under fair dealing. The Copyright Act permits educational institutions to perform music, whether recorded or live, without payment or permission from the owner of the copyright. A person acting under the authority of a non-profit educational institution can: • perform a musical work live if the performance is primarily by students of the educational institution; • play sound recordings containing a musical work; and • play radio and television programs containing a musical work while the program is being transmitted (over-the-air broadcast, cable, satellite, or over the Internet). The following conditions apply. The performance must: • take place on the premises of an educational institution; • be for educational or training purposes; • not be for profit; and • take place before an audience consisting primarily of students of the educational institution, persons acting under its authority, or any person who is directly responsible for setting a curriculum for the educational institution. The Copyright Act permits the public performance of music in schools when it is “in furtherance of an educational object.” Performances that are not in furtherance of an educational object must be authorized by the copyright owner, or by a collective that represents the owner.

    9. SOCAN and Re:Sound can provide licences to schools and school boards across Canada

    10. Did the music use occur during school hours? • Will the student be graded on the activity involving the music use? • Does the music use involve a demonstration by a student or teacher for other students, teachers, assessors, or parents? • Is it reasonable to consider the music use to be for educational purposes? The phrase “educational purposes” is not defined in the Copyright Act but can be described as an activity that is planned and where the objective is for students to meet one or more subject or program outcomes. • Was the music used on school premises? • If admission was controlled, was it free? • Was the music use for a non-profit purpose?

    11. The Copyright Act contains a users’ right permitting anyone, not just students and teachers, to use copyright-protected works to create new works. This users’ right is referred to in the Copyright Act as “non-commercial user-generated content.” This users’ right can be found in section 29.21 of the Copyright Act as amended by the Copyright Modernization Act. The following conditions apply to the creation of non-commercial user-generated content: 1. It can only be used for non-commercial purposes. 2. The original source must be mentioned, if it is reasonable to do so. 3. The original work used to generate the content must have been acquired legally. 4. The resulting user-generated content does not have a “substantial adverse effect” on the market for the original work.

    12. The Copyright Act permits showing an audiovisual work such as a DVD or video as long as the work is not an infringing copy or the person responsible for the showing has no reasonable grounds to believe it is an infringing copy. Teachers can show audiovisual works purchased or rented from a retail store, a copy borrowed from the library, a copy borrowed from a friend, and a YouTube video.

13.No. Teachers cannot copy an audiovisual work at home and then show it in the classroom. Teachers can, however, show a legally obtained copy in the classroom. A legally obtained copy includes a copy purchased or rented from a retail store, a copy borrowed from the library, a copy borrowed from a friend, and a YouTube video.

    14. Owners of legal copies of computer programs may make a single reproduction of these programs in only two situations: 1. An owner of a legitimate copy of a computer program may make one backup copy of that program. The person must be able to prove that the backup copy is erased as soon as he or she ceases to be the owner of the copy of the computer program from which the backup was made. 2. An owner of a legitimate copy of a computer program may also make a single copy of that program by adapting, modifying, or converting the computer program or translating it into another computer language, provided that: (i) the reproduction is essential for the compatibility of the program with a particular computer; (ii) the reproduction is solely for the person’s own use; and (iii) the copy is erased when the person ceases to be the owner of the copy of the program from which the copy was made.

    15.  Yes. Educational institutions, teachers, and students may save, download, and share publicly available Internet materials, as well as use that material in the classroom and communicate it to students or others within their education circle. “Publicly available” materials are those posted on-line by content creators and copyright owners without any technological protection measures, such as a password, encryption system, or similar technology intended to limit access or distribution, and without a clearly visible notice prohibiting educational use. Routine classroom uses may be made of publicly available Internet materials, such as incorporating on-line text or images into homework assignments, performing music or plays on-line for peers, exchanging materials with teachers or peers, or reposting a work on a restricted-access course Web site. To encourage copyright awareness and respect in all circumstances, students and educators are required to cite the source of the Internet materials they use.

    16. No. A digital lock is a technological protection measure (such as encryption or a password) that restricts the ability of users of digital content from sharing or copying the content. The Copyright Act prohibits breaking a digital lock even for educational uses that are otherwise permitted by the Copyright Act. For example, the encryption on most commercial DVDs, or the serial-key validation required by many software programs, protects these DVDs and software programs from unauthorized use. These protections cannot be broken even if the purpose of the use is otherwise allowed. I do not feel that this is very safe.

"Online Standards of Service Use: (Assignment #1)".

    1. Twitter
    2. Instagram
    3. Facebook
    4. Ask.fm
    5. iTunes

    • 2. According to "the street" pretty much every social network has a clause written into their user agreements that allows them to use your pictures for commercial purposes.
    • Facebook says that it will provide notice of any pending changes to its terms and conditions, and give users an opportunity to comment on those changes. But to get this notice you'll need to "Like" the Facebook Site Governance page, and for your comments on a proposed change to make any difference, at least 7,000 users must comment on the post announcing the change.
    • Google is particularly interested in what you do with your time, and you can even see the online dossier the company keeps on you.
    • For some services, such as antivirus software, you're buying a one-year update agreement, and typically they're opting you in to sign up for another year for the going rate.
    • Netflix requires you to input your credit card info when signing up for a free week or month of service. Their hope, of course, is that you'll like the service enough to continue on beyond the free trial - or failing that, forget you signed up in the first place.

Journal Entry #4 (Digital Rights and Responsibilities)

    • The thing that I found most surprising was how strict some of the rules are and how easy it could be to break them.
    • I think most people do but over half probably do not because teenagers do not realize what they do when they are online.
    • If I had to pick only one commandment I would choose " thou shall not create a false identity" because acting like your someone else or stealing someone's identity is not okay.
